Electric
motor systems are major energy users, many are not
controlled efficiently.
A Variable
Speed Drive (VSD) is a power electronic device used to
control the speed of an electric motor. Most motors are
connected directly to the main supply and run a full speed
only. A VSD enables the motor to be operated at a different
speed or speeds matched to the requirement of the process.
In most
fan and pump applications, because energy consumption and
motor speed are exponentially related, even a relatively
small reduction in speed can result in significant energy
and operating cost reductions. A 10% speed reduction will
result in a 30% energy saving; similarly a 20% speed
reduction will save 50% in energy and operational costs!
Results
are instantaneous and payback periods are very
short, typically under 2 years.
